Nationals manager Jim Riggleman spoke to third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on Thursday. Zimmerman, who is on the disabled list after surgery to repair an abdominal injury, is performing baseball activities — taking batting practice, hitting off a batting tee, taking ground balls and long tossing — at the team's complex in Viera, Fla.

Riggleman anticipating Zimmerman's return

Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said he hopes third baseman Ryan Zimmerman can begin baseball activities later this week and appear in games sometime next week. Zimmerman has missed the last four games with a left groin strain.

Morse could serve as Zimmerman's backup

Nationals outfielder Michael Morse found himself playing third base in Monday's game against the Mets. Manager Jim Riggleman hinted that Morse could be Ryan Zimmerman's backup at third this year.
