Nationals center fielder Justin Maxwell didn't start his second straight game Monday because of a sore right thumb but is likely to play on Tuesday, said manager Jim Riggleman.

Jim Riggleman said he wanted to get a long look at Justin Maxwell before the season came to an end. Watching Maxwell on the field has been put on hold, because he is expected to miss the next two games with a right thumb injury.

After Monday's 7-2 loss at Great American Ball Park, the Nationals optioned outfielder Justin Maxwell to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled right-hander Luis Atilano, who will pitch against the Reds on Tuesday night.
