Strasburg Wins in Last Triple A Start

In the Triple-A finale for Stephen Strasburg, the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Buffalo Bisons by a 7-1 final. Strasburg hurled five goose egg innings to pick up the victory and three Syracuse players hit two-run dingers on Thursday afternoon. Syracuse (32-21) opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning. After Pedro Lopez and Strasburg whiffed to begin the frame, Boomer Whiting reached on a bunt. Pete Orr followed and hit his seventh home run, a two run shot, to put Syracuse in front 2-0. In the fifth, pinch hitter Kevin Mench singled off of Buffalo starter Dillon Gee (6-1) with one down. He advanced to second on an error by first baseman Mike Jacobs and moved to third on a walk to Orr. Chase Lambin scored Mench with a grounder back to the pitcher Gee.

Buffalo (30-24) allowed two more runs to score in the sixth inning. Chiefs catcher Devin Ivany hit his first Triple-A home run, a two run shot, off the left field pole to increase the lead to 5-0 after six. The Chiefs hit their third home run of the afternoon in the seventh inning when with Whitesell on base, Chris Duncan hit an opposite field homer to left for his sixth. The Syracuse lead was pushed to 7-0 after that at bat. The lone Buffalo run came in the bottom of the eighth off of Chiefs reliever Collin Balester. It was the first run he has surrendered in three relief appearances since returning from the disabled list. Strasburg (4-1) earned the win pitching five innings, giving up three hits, and striking out five. He is scheduled to make his next start on June 8th for the Washington Nationals against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
